Questions

What is a METAR?

A METAR is a routine weather observation from an airport, usually issued every hour. It reports wind, visibility, weather, clouds, temperature, dew point and the altimeter setting.

What is a TAF?

A TAF (terminal aerodrome forecast) is a forecast for the area within about 5 miles of an airport, usually covering 24 to 30 hours. FM, TEMPO, BECMG and PROB groups describe the changes.

Why are the times in Z?

Aviation weather uses UTC, written as Z (Zulu). This decoder also shows observation times in your own time zone.

Which airports work?

Any airport that publishes METARs or TAFs, worldwide. Use the four-letter ICAO code: CYYZ for Toronto Pearson, KJFK for New York JFK, EGLL for London Heathrow.
