How to set your home page in Google Chrome
Chrome splits “home page” into two settings: the page that opens when Chrome starts, and the page the home button opens. Here's how to set both. We use OnePane's address, https://onepane.page/app/, but any address works.
Open a page when Chrome starts
- Click the ⋮ menu at the top right → Settings.
- In the left menu, choose On startup.
- Select Open a specific page or set of pages.
- Click Add a new page, paste the address, and click Add.
- Close Chrome completely and open it again to check.
The steps are the same on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chromebook. If another site opens instead, check the list for an old page and use ⋮ → Remove next to it.
Add a home button
- Go to ⋮ → Settings → Appearance.
- Turn on Show home button.
- Choose the option to enter a custom web address, and paste the same address.
A house icon appears next to the address bar. Keyboard shortcut: Alt + Home on Windows and Chromebook, ⌘ Shift H on a Mac.
Can the new tab page be a website?
Not in Chrome's settings. The new tab page always shows Chrome's own page, which you can tidy with the Customize Chrome button at the bottom right (shortcuts, colours, background). To get your page in new tabs, you can:
- Pin it: right-click its tab → Pin. It stays open on the left every time Chrome starts.
- Bookmark it first on your bookmarks bar (Ctrl Shift B shows the bar).
- Use a new tab extension from the Chrome Web Store that opens a page you choose. Pick a well-reviewed one, because these extensions can see every tab you open.
Chrome on Android
- Tap ⋮ → Settings → Homepage.
- Turn it on and choose Enter custom web address.
- Paste the address. A home button appears in the toolbar.
More options for phones are in our Android guide. Chrome on iPhone and iPad has no home page setting; see the iPhone guide.
If it doesn't stick
- “This setting is managed by your organization” or “controlled by an extension”: a work policy or an extension has taken over. Remove or turn off the extension in ⋮ → Extensions, or ask your IT team.
- A different page keeps coming back: run Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults, then set your page again. Your bookmarks and passwords stay.
- Chrome reopens your old tabs instead: that's the Continue where you left off option. Switch it to Open a specific page.

Click the three-dot menu, then Settings, then On startup. Choose Open a specific page or set of pages, click Add a new page, paste the address and click Add.
